THE ALBUM

December 1987: in a country that had spent decades treating rock music as ideological contraband, forty-five Soviet bands took the stage at the Малая спортивная арена in Luzhniki for an officially sanctioned state festival of rock. Рок-Панорама-87 was not an underground event — it was organized by the Moscow Komsomol, the Moscow Rock Laboratory, and the city's cultural administration — which made it one of the most remarkable documents of late Soviet musical life. This second volume of the festival recording captures that specific electricity: the sound of musicians who had spent years circulating music on hand-to-hand magnitizdat tapes finally performing before thousands of people at a venue the state had handed them.

As a live compilation it covers a startling range. There is the atmospheric guitar work of Альянс, the wiry post-punk of Вежливый отказ, the propulsive street rock of Гарик Сукачёв and Бригада С, the Soviet new wave of Нюанс, and even the presence of Latvian group Līvi — a reminder that "Soviet rock" in 1987 was never a monolithic sound but a genuinely multinational scene. The recording, engineered by А. Штильман, has the roughness of a live document: crowd noise, stage transitions, the physicality of a concert space rather than a studio. That rawness is the point.

ARTIST & RECORDING CONTEXT

Because this is a festival compilation, there is no single creative force behind it — the record is a cross-section of the Moscow (and broader Soviet) rock scene at a particular inflection point. Several acts here were at career-defining moments. Альянс, formed in Moscow in the early 1980s and led by Игорь Журавлёв, had refined a sound that blended atmospheric guitar textures with a melodic sensibility closer to British post-punk than anything in the Soviet mainstream; "На заре" would later become their signature track, but "Злой Рок," captured here live, shows the band already operating at a high level. Вежливый отказ brought an angular, almost art-rock approach — tight rhythms, oblique lyrics — that set them apart from most of their peers on this bill. Бригада С, fronted by the charismatic Гарик Сукачёв, leaned into a rougher, more physically urgent rock, and "Бродяга" here is a good example of why they were one of the festival's most visceral live acts. Нюанс's contribution, "Семён," runs to nearly seven minutes and shows the more experimental end of what the Moscow scene was producing. Līvi, performing in Latvian, are a notable inclusion — their presence at a Moscow-organised state festival speaks to the brief, fragile cultural openness of the moment.

THIS PRESSING

This LP was issued by Мелодия in 1988, pressed at the Ленинградский завод грампластинок (Leningrad Record Factory), and carries the catalogue matrix С60 27209/27210. It is the second disc of a three-volume series documenting the festival, released as a standard Soviet retail LP at the fixed state price of 2 roubles 50 kopecks. The sleeve credits confirm this as a Всесоюзная студия грамзаписи (All-Union Recording Studio) production — the institutional machinery of Soviet state music publishing brought to bear on material that, just a few years earlier, would never have cleared official release. Copies exist in two label variants (differing matrix stamps and pressing dates in mid-to-late 1988), suggesting the initial pressing run was supplemented; the white-label variant with matrix З1246 appears to be the earlier pressing. The record was not a licensed edition of a foreign release — this is an entirely domestic Soviet production, recorded at the festival and issued through the normal Melodiya pipeline, distributed through state music shops (музыкальные магазины) across the USSR.

COLLECTOR SIGNIFICANCE

Within the Soviet Union, Рок-Панорама-87 was a genuinely mass-market document — not a rarity at the time of release, but something closer to an official chronicle of the moment perestroika cracked open Soviet rock culture. The multi-volume series sold through state retail channels at low, controlled prices, meaning the records reached far beyond the usual underground audience.

For collectors today, this second volume is among the most sought of the series, largely because of the Альянс, Вежливый отказ, and Нюанс performances, all of which are relatively hard to find in any official format. The Leningrad pressing is clean DMM-cut vinyl, and the two label variants give collectors something specific to hunt — the earlier white-label pressing carries a mild premium among those who track Soviet rock pressings closely.
