THE ALBUM

Released on Мелодия in 1980, Огненный Поцелуй is a Soviet flexi disc pairing two ABBA tracks — Огненный Поцелуй (Kisses Of Fire) and Хотите Ли Вы? (Voulez-Vous) — with material from an entirely separate Soviet act on the flip. Both ABBA tracks originate from Voulez-Vous (1979), a disco-leaning album that marked a deliberate shift toward dancefloor energy, recorded at a moment when that sound was reaching commercial saturation in Western markets. Kisses Of Fire is a mid-tempo piece built around layered vocal harmonies and a soft synthesizer backdrop; Voulez-Vous is the harder-edged counterpart — propulsive, repetitive, anchored by a bass-driven groove that drew direct comparisons to the Eurodisco production coming out of France at the time. Both tracks were international hits. The flexi format was the standard Soviet vehicle for introducing Western popular music to domestic audiences under state licensing.

ARTIST & RECORDING CONTEXT

ABBA — Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad — recorded the Voulez-Vous album across sessions that included material cut in the Bahamas as well as at their Polar Studios base in Stockholm. Andersson and Ulvaeus handled production and songwriting throughout, with the disco direction of Voulez-Vous influenced in part by sessions the pair attended in the United States during 1978. The vocal interplay between Fältskog and Lyngstad is central to both tracks presented here: Kisses Of Fire leans on Lyngstad's lead, while Voulez-Vous uses the two voices in tighter unison against the rhythm track.

Side B of this flexi belongs to Гунеш (Gunesh), a jazz-fusion ensemble from the Turkmen SSR. Девушка and Обман represent a distinctly different sonic world — rooted in Central Asian musical traditions and blended with contemporary jazz instrumentation. Гунеш were among the most distinctive ensembles to emerge from Soviet Central Asia during this period, and their inclusion alongside ABBA on a single flexi is an unusual pairing that reflects Мелодия's occasional practice of bundling Western licensed content with domestic acts on the same disc.
