Supraphon

Supraphon is a Czech record label founded in 1932, when the trademark was first registered in Czechoslovakia, initially in connection with a record player. The label's identifying "Lion with Lyre" logo was registered in 1949. From the 1950s through the early 1990s, Supraphon functioned as the principal record label of Czechoslovakia, releasing material across classical, pop, rock, jazz, folk, and spoken word genres, as well as a number of experimental and scientific recordings. During this period it also served as the primary licensee and distributor of foreign releases for the domestic market. The label operated under successive state and corporate structures, including Gramofonové závody n.p., SHV (Státní hudební vydavatelství n.p.), and VHJ Supraphon, reflecting the shifting organization of the Czechoslovak cultural industry. Following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1992, the label continued under Czech ownership. Between 1994 and 2003, Supraphon's focus narrowed primarily to classical music, while its pop and jazz back catalog was acquired by Bonton Music a.s. and later by Sony Music / Bonton s.r.o., with those recordings issued on the Bonton label during that period. Today the label is owned by Supraphon a.s. and holds an archive estimated at approximately 55,000 pop and rock tracks, 30,000 classical recordings, 8,000 folk music recordings, 5,000 spoken word recordings, and 3,000 jazz tracks, incorporating both the Panton catalog and the Bonton catalog from 1990 to 1997.

Supraphon pressings are actively sought by collectors for several practical and historical reasons. As the sole major domestic label for several decades, it is the source record for a large portion of Czech and Slovak recorded music output from the mid-twentieth century onward. Many titles were pressed and repressed across multiple decades, sometimes spanning more than thirty years, with individual versions distinguishable by center label details, catalog number schemes, manufacturing date codes, and galvanoplasty markings. The label issued recordings across a wide range of series, including dedicated classical archival editions such as the Václav Talich and Karel Ančerl series, domestic pop and jazz documentation series, and export pressings distributed through Artia. The label operated under Label Code LC 0358 / LC 00358. For collectors, precise identification of individual pressings depends on careful examination of center labels, as catalog numbers on sleeves and labels do not always correspond, particularly during numbering scheme transitions around 1967, 1978, and 1987.
