John Lennon

John Lennon was an English singer, songwriter, rhythm guitarist, and peace activist, born on 9 October 1940 in Liverpool, Lancashire, UK. He gained international recognition as the founder, co-lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles, the group he formed in Liverpool in 1956 under the earlier name The Quarrymen. His songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney became one of the most commercially and critically significant in the history of popular music. Lennon was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a performer in 1994. He was also known for his two books of comic writings and drawings, In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works, both published in the mid-1960s.

After the Beatles disbanded in 1970, Lennon continued as a solo artist and as a collaborator with his second wife, Yoko Ono, with whom he had formed the Plastic Ono Band in 1969. His post-Beatles output included solo albums and a body of work recorded with Ono, spanning rock, experimental, and avant-garde directions. His solo recordings produced several internationally charting singles. From 1975, Lennon stepped away from the music business to raise his son Sean Lennon, returning in 1980 with a new collaborative album with Ono. He was shot and killed on 8 December 1980 in New York City, three weeks after that album's release. His ashes were scattered in Central Park, where a memorial was subsequently erected.

Although Lennon was British rather than Eastern European, his records circulated widely across the Eastern Bloc during his lifetime and afterward, often through official state pressings, licensed releases, and bootleg copies. Original Eastern Bloc pressings of Beatles and Lennon solo material — including releases on labels such as Supraphon, Melodiya, and Tonpress — are sought by collectors for their regional variation in cover art, label design, and pressing quality, as well as for the historical context of Western rock music entering restricted markets.
