Гунеш (Gunesh)

Гунеш (Gunesh)

Гунеш (Gunesh) is an ensemble from Turkmenistan, formed in the early 1970s during the Soviet period. The group was led by drummer Ришад Шафиев (Rishad Shafiev) and built its sound around a fusion of traditional Turkmen folk music with contemporary compositional approaches, placing it within the broader category of Soviet-era ethno-fusion and new music. The name Гунеш means "sun" in Turkmen.

The ensemble developed a style that drew on Central Asian melodic and rhythmic traditions while incorporating elements associated with jazz and avant-garde composition, a direction that aligned with a wider movement of folk-influenced experimental music that emerged across several Soviet republics during the 1970s and 1980s. Their recordings were released through the Soviet state label Мелодия (Melodiya), the primary outlet for such material during the period.

Collectors seek out Гунеш records for their rarity outside the former Soviet Union and for the distinctive combination of Central Asian folk instrumentation with studio-era production techniques. Soviet-era Melodiya pressings of regional ensembles like Гунеш were produced in limited runs relative to mainstream releases and are now difficult to find in good condition, making them of interest to collectors focused on Soviet ethnic and experimental music.
