Abba
ABBA is a Swedish pop group formed in 1972, consisting of four members: vocalist Agnetha Fältskog (born April 5, 1950), guitarist and vocalist Björn Ulvaeus (born April 25, 1945), keyboardist and vocalist Benny Andersson (born December 16, 1946), and vocalist Anni-Frid Lyngstad (born November 15, 1945). The group's name is an acronym drawn from the first initials of each member's given name. Their international breakthrough came in 1974, when they won the Eurovision Song Contest, an event that opened a sustained period of commercial success lasting through the early 1980s. During that time they released a succession of hit singles and albums that achieved wide sales across Europe, North America, and Australia. The group ceased releasing new material in 1982, though they never formally disbanded.
A significant revival of interest in the group began in 1992 with the release of the compilation known by its catalogue number 12249, which went on to become one of the best-selling albums in recording history. This renewed popularity fed directly into the 1999 London opening of the stage musical Mamma Mia!, built around the group's catalog; the production has since been staged in more than 50 countries across all six continents. ABBA were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Performers category in 2010. In November 2021 the group released a new studio album, their first in nearly four decades, followed by a London residency beginning in May 2022 featuring the members as digitally rendered virtual performers.
For collectors, ABBA's Eastern European presence is of particular interest given the reach of their records into markets behind the Iron Curtain. Licensed pressings and local editions from countries such as Poland and Czechoslovakia circulated during the group's peak years, and these regional variants attract attention for their distinct label designs, sleeve artwork, and pressing quality. Original domestic pressings from these markets are consistently sought after within the archive's scope.
