Modus

Modus is a Slovak pop and rock group founded in 1967, performing under the Modus name from 1968. The group underwent a significant shift in direction from 1974, when Ján Lehotský, who had joined in 1972, took over leadership. The band remained active through the following decades until disbanding in the early 1990s, later reviving in 2002.

Over the course of their career, Modus became one of the more prominent acts in the Slovak popular music landscape, releasing records through the state-run Czechoslovak music industry infrastructure. Their output spans the period when Slovak pop and rock operated within the constraints and channels of the Eastern Bloc music system, which shapes both the character of their recordings and the context in which collectors now seek them out.

For collectors focused on Eastern European popular music, Modus records are of interest as documented examples of Slovak pop and rock production from the late communist era. Their releases from the 1970s and 1980s, issued on labels operating under the Czechoslovak state recording system, are sought by those building archives of the region's popular output from that period.
