ABOUT THIS RECORD

THE ALBUM FIRST

Pupo — the stage name of Florentine singer-songwriter Enzo Ghinazzi — broke through in Italy in 1979 with his debut album on Baby Records, a Milan-based pop imprint distributed through CGD. The record arrived at a moment when Italian melodico pop was commercially dominant across the country, and Pupo's blend of soft balladry and uptempo Euro-pop found an immediate audience. The album produced two of the most recognisable Italian pop singles of the era: Su di noi and Gelato al cioccolato, the latter becoming a pan-European hit that charted strongly in multiple territories and received extensive radio play across Western and Eastern Europe alike.

ARTISTIC CONTEXT

Ghinazzi wrote and composed the bulk of the material himself, a relative rarity in the Italian pop industry of the period where production teams and outside songwriters were the norm. The arrangements lean on clean electric piano, lightly orchestrated strings and driving rhythm tracks typical of late-1970s Italian pop production. Gelato al cioccolato is the obvious standout — a propulsive, hook-driven track built around a memorable piano riff that crossed language barriers with ease. Su di noi, by contrast, is a straightforward romantic ballad that became a staple of Italian wedding playlists and demonstrated Ghinazzi's skill with a slower melodic arc.

THIS PRESSING

This edition was manufactured and released by Мелодия (Melodiya), the Soviet state record label, as a licensed pressing for distribution within the USSR. Melodiya routinely acquired licences for Western pop releases that had demonstrated broad European appeal, and Pupo's success across Eastern Europe made him a logical candidate for Soviet distribution. These pressings were produced at one of Melodiya's several pressing plants across the Soviet Union and issued through the state retail and distribution network.

COLLECTOR SIGNIFICANCE

Soviet Melodiya pressings of Western pop artists are collected both for their scarcity outside the USSR and for their status as documents of the cultural exchange that permeated the Eastern Bloc during the late Soviet period. Pupo had a particularly devoted following in the USSR and across Eastern Europe that outlasted his commercial peak in Western markets, and this pressing circulated in a closed distribution system that kept quantities regionally contained. For collectors of Italian pop on Eastern Bloc labels, this sits alongside Melodiya editions of other CGD and Baby Records artists as a genuinely scarce item outside its country of origin.

TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

  • Gelato al cioccolato — The album's commercial engine, built on an insistent piano hook that drove its chart performance across Europe.
  • Su di noi — A slower ballad that became one of Ghinazzi's most enduring compositions in Italy and across the Eastern Bloc.
