Kati Kovacs
Kati Kovács is a Hungarian solo singer, born on 25 October 1944 in Verpelét, Hungary. Active from the 1960s onward, she worked across pop, disco, and related styles, recording prolifically for the Hungarian domestic market while also building a sustained audience in the German Democratic Republic during the 1970s. Her career placed her among the most prominent Hungarian female vocalists of her era.
Kovács won the Hungarian Popsongfestival in both 1966 and 1972, and in 1972 also took the top prize at the Popsongfestival held in Dresden, GDR — a result that helped establish her profile in East Germany and led to releases and recognition there throughout the decade. In 1974 she won the Castlebar International Song Contest in Ireland. She collaborated with Locomotiv GT, the leading Hungarian rock group of the period, which brought her work into contact with a harder-edged sound than her mainstream pop output.
Collectors seek out her records for several reasons: her GDR-market releases are of particular interest to Eastern Bloc record collectors, her association with Locomotiv GT makes certain titles crossover items sought by fans of Hungarian rock, and her contest-winning singles from the early 1970s are considered key documents of the Hungarian pop scene of that period. Her records appear on Hungarian state labels and on GDR pressings, with the latter often being harder to locate in good condition.
